To dive deeper into Dawn’s passion for Exercise as Medicine and why she has chosen Vitala as a key tool in her practice, we sat down with her to ask a few questions:
What sparked your passion for using Exercise as Medicine in your practice?
“Prior to becoming a Medical Fitness Practitioner, as a personal trainer I was always interested in the science of exercise and utilizing the best science based exercise for clients interested in building muscle. With time I started to realize that my clients that also have chronic conditions started to feel better and reduce their meds. After becoming a nutritionist I really understood the impact of blood based nutrition and specific exercises.”
Why did you choose Vitala to support your patients in staying active and healthy?
“I chose to partner with Vitala for several key reasons. First and foremost, the founders share my deep passion for utilizing fitness and nutrition as powerful tools for healing and preventive care. Additionally, the organization maintains a grassroots, collaborative approach, fostering a hands-on relationship with us as providers. This ensures we can work closely together to deliver the best possible care to our clients, aligning perfectly with both of our values and vision. Additionally, Vitala places a strong emphasis on quality over quantity, prioritizing thoughtful, strategic growth. This commitment to maintaining high standards ensures that every step forward is intentional, focusing on delivering exceptional care rather than rapid expansion. It's a philosophy that resonates deeply with my own approach to wellness.”
What kinds of results have you seen in your patients since incorporating exercise as medicine into their care plans?
“As a Medical Fitness Practitioner, I had already been using fitness as medicine, achieving remarkable results with my patients—helping them reduce adverse health markers, decrease medications, and minimize doctor visits. Through Vitala, I’ve been able to offer an additional safe and effective exercise tool that empowers patients to enhance their health and wellness independently. The Vitala app is an outstanding resource that continues to evolve, providing even greater support for patient success.”
What advice would you give to other healthcare providers who are considering using Exercise as Medicine in their practice?
“My advice to healthcare providers considering incorporating exercise as medicine is to first reflect on what inspired them to become a physician. If your true goal is to help people heal from the root cause of their conditions, then integrating fitness and nutrition into your practice is a natural fit. The benefits I’ve witnessed are profound—patients are able to reduce adverse health markers, medications, and even doctor visits. Offering safe, individualized exercise plans can have transformative results. Tools like the Vitala app further empower patients to take control of their own health and wellness. By embracing this holistic approach, you’ll not only improve outcomes but also reconnect with the core mission of healing.”
What advice would you give patients who want to increase their physical activity levels?
“For patients looking to increase their physical activity levels, my advice is to first consult with your healthcare provider to term what kind of exercise is safest for your condition. Next start with small, manageable goals and gradually build from there. Consistency is key, so find an activity you enjoy, whether it’s walking, swimming, or a fitness class, to help make exercise a regular part of your routine. Listen to your body and progress at your own pace—overdoing it early on can lead to burnout or injury. Also, consider incorporating strength training and flexibility exercises for a well-rounded approach. Most importantly, remember that movement is medicine, and every step you take is a step toward better health.”
